Damaged fretwork on an ebony ended Lachenal New Model baritone English concertina.
Even the fretwork on the left, that appears complete, is breaking away from the solid wood on both sides.
First task is to separate the two halves of the action box and see if any of the missing wood is inside.
One additional piece is large enough to use. The largest piece on the left had been badly repaired with tabs of glue on the back. As the next photo shows there is an open crack that needs to be closed and glued before the loose pieces will line up.
The green oval shows the open crack, with debris keeping it open. The small green circles highlight where the crack runs through the edge of the fretwork. The red circle shows an edge offset by a couple of mm by the movement of the crack.
The extent of previous repairs is greater than I thought. Even the apparently intact right side has been extensively, and inexpertly, repaired. Critically three out of four support blocks which fit under the thumbstrap and the pinkie rest are missing. This is one reason why the damage is so extensive. Without the supports the only thing preventing the collapse of the ends is the strength of the fretwork.
